Victims Advocate

The Southport Police Department is fortunate to have a full time volunteer Crisis Team. Anthony Buntyn is the Police Chaplain and Victims Advocate. The Victims Advocate assists victims of crimes and other trauma in the community. He also insures the rights of victims are represented and protected. The Police Chaplain provides confidential support to officers and their families in times of joy and sadness. The chaplain also works with local churches in the community and with the citizens as a liaison between the citizens, churches, the Southport Police Department and the City of Southport. The chaplains work is challenging and he often responds to the scene of the crisis, home, workplaces, hospitals, on a 24-hour basis.

 

Anthony Buntyn started with the Southport Police Department in January 2004. As the Crisis Team Chaplain Buntyn is a passionate person when it comes to helping those in need. He is very active within the community and with different organizations. Anthony is an active member of several organizations such as: The International Conference of Police Chaplains, The Fraternal Order of Police Officers Lodge #853 (Chaplain), North Carolina Victims Assistance Network, Citizens For Justice, Brunswick County S.A.R.T. Sexual Assault Response Team, and Chaplain Buntyn was recently asked to be on the S.E.R.T. State Emergency Response Team for North Carolina. Anthony Buntyn is very active with the youth in Brunswick County on the weekends at Highest Praise Worship Center in Shallotte N.C. open to all youth ages 12 to 18 years.

 

Services offered by the Chaplain include:

Notifying and providing care for families in the event of sudden death due to accidents, suicide or homicide.

Providing counseling and referrals for victims and victim's families.

Assisting citizens and officers in coping with critical incidents.

Hospital visitation for officers and immediate family members.

Serving as liaison between the Sheriff’s Office and the religious community.

Conducting religious services such as funerals and weddings.

Training and workshops for professional and volunteer groups.

Networking with the State Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.) in times of local and regional disasters and critical incidents.

Assisting other organizations and law enforcement agencies on behalf of the Southport Police Department in times of crisis and tragedy.
